Our approach to forest management
Holmen's forest management is shaped by a long-term vision and a deep respect for nature. We care for over one million hectares of forest in Sweden, balancing productivity with conservation. Our approach combines ecological insight with field-based expertise, supported by a commitment to continuous learning. We study how forests develop over time and use those insights to refine our practices. This helps ensure that the forests we rely on today remain healthy, diverse and resilient for generations to come.
Forest stewardship for the future
We manage our forests with a 100-year outlook, planning every step to support long-term growth and resilience. Holmen owns 1.3 million hectares of forest, dedicating over one million hectares to productive forestry and reserving 20 per cent for nature conservation. During each harvest, approximately 10 per cent of every site is preserved for environmental protection, meeting all legal standards.
Standards you can see
Transparency is built into our forestry practices. All Holmen forests are chain-of-custody and PEFC™ certified, meeting internationally recognised standards for sustainability and traceability. These certifications reflect our commitment to responsible resource use and continuous improvement.
The cycle of forest regeneration
Every harvested area is regenerated. With 35 million seedlings produced annually, Holmen ensures continuous forest renewal. But regeneration is just one part of the cycle.
We also ensure that every part of the tree is used efficiently, supporting a circular bioeconomy that reduces waste and maximizes value. From planting to harvesting, and from production to replanting, it’s a cycle designed to keep forests thriving.
