Berga Knowledge Forest

Creating habitats for species dependent on burned land and wood.

Berga Knowledge Forest

Berga Knowledge Forest is located outside Umeå in the province of Västerbotten, northern Sweden. A fascinating mosaic landscape featuring expansive wetlands, forested, rocky terrain, tarns, and pine forests with traces of old fires.

After the most recent Ice Age, Berga was completely under water. The kilometre thick ice compressed the Earth’s crust, and as it melted, the land began to rise again. The water receded metre by metre, creating massive shifts in the landscape.
In Berga, we continuously use conservation burning to create habitats for species dependent on burned land and wood. One of them is Tragosoma depsarium, a species of longhorn beetle that’s part of a special conservation programme for threatened species in Sweden. Thanks to Holmen’s efforts, the beetle has managed to establish itself in Berga Knowledge Forest.

We also carry out forestry work in Berga. Mature forest is harvested and turned into renewable products. New forest is planted, with growing trees that bind more carbon dioxide than old ones.

In brief

Berga Knowledge Forest is located 15 km west of Robertsfors in Västerbotten province, and the theme of the forest is conservation burning.

BURNING FOR DIVERSITY

Conservation burning

The forests of Berga have burnt at various times throughout history. In the past the fires occurred naturally, whereas today Holmen carries out planned conservation burning.

Holmens logotyp
