Our commitment to sustainability

Overview

Bringing leftovers to life

As part of the Holmen Group, we are committed to using renewable materials and managing our resources in a sustainable way. To create our premium paperboards and innovative paper products, we use the leftover wood parts from sawmills and forest management.

More about our production

The nature of our materials

Sustainability starts with the materials we use and how we manage them. From forest to finished product, every choice matters.

Responsible forestry

We manage over a million hectares responsibly, balancing growth, biodiversity and long-term climate benefits.

Sustainable forestry practices

Biodiversity

Everything in nature is connected. We protect ecosystems and manage resources to support a sustainable future.

How we support biodiversity

Why we use fresh fibres

Renewable and traceable fresh fibres form the base of strong, recyclable paper and paperboard that keeps the cycle alive.

Explore sustainability in depth

Sustainability is complex, and every detail counts. Explore the comparisons, studies and tools that shape how we understand materials, circularity and climate impact.

Fresh fibre vs recycled fibre

Fresh fibres bring strength, purity and durability to paper and paperboard. Over time, recycled fibres weaken and need renewal. Fresh fibre keeps the recycling loop alive by adding strong, clean fibres that maintain quality across many cycles.

Paperboard vs plastic

Paperboard packaging is renewable, recyclable, and has a low climate impact. Plastic can offer durability, but its fossil origin and disposal challenges make paperboard a more suitable choice in most applications. Our research compares their performance and environmental footprints in detail.

Climate impact study

Our life-cycle studies explore how material choices, energy sources and design decisions influence carbon footprints. The findings show how switching to fresh fibre paperboard and fossil-free production can significantly lower total climate impact.

Circularity

Circularity means designing systems that regenerate resources and reduce waste. Our work demonstrates how renewable fibres, efficient energy use and recycling loops create circularity, keeping resources in motion and value in the system.
