Holmen INNR changes the market from within

Holmen INNR is a fresh-fibre fluting and interliner containerboard. Compared to traditional containerboard components, it is lightweight yet still strong. Holmen INNR 73 gsm is a great replacement for a standard 80-85 gsm fluting/medium. If you need 10 000 m2, you only have to buy 730 kg instead of 800–850 kg. That is a reduction of 9 to 16 percent material.

Less weight also means less carbon footprint. Holmen INNR has an impressively low carbon footprint compared to all the semi-chemical and recycled-based containerboard components on the market.

How does lightweight containerboard work?

Lower the weight of the box by using containerboard components that are sturdy for their weight. Holmen's lightweight fluting works thanks to the relative stiffness and elasticity of all individual wood fibres. The fibres are mechanically separated in the production process, and the result is a fluting/medium component that is lighter, but still strong and stable.

The right fluting makes your packaging lightweight

When you calculate the weight of your end product, you will notice that changing the basis weight of the fluting/medium containerboard has a big effect on the total weight. By using Holmen INNR in all the inner layers of a double or triple-wall board, both as fluting and interliner, you will truly see the lightweighting effect. We can help you calculate the difference, find your contact below.

Direct contact with food

Holmen INNR is certified for food contact. With its smooth and even surface it runs well through both the corrugating and converting machines, and it reacts well to gluing. It's the perfect containerboard component.

INNR can safely be used in food packaging. It may stand in direct contact with dry, moist and fatty foodstuffs. It is certified by ISEGA, approved by BfR, Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung, and adheres to (EC) No. 1935/2004. This regulation applies to all food contact materials within the European Union.

Why use interliner for packaging?

You may ask what interliner is, and why it is used in packaging? The interliner is a containerboard component that stabilizes the intermediate layers. It's a complement to the corrugated layers (fluting) and the liner. By using a lightweight interliner paper for the inner layers together with lightweight fluting, you will lower the total weight of your product and reduce your CO2 emissions.

Get more square metres

Compared to a standard fluting/medium containerboard in 80 or 85 gsm you will get more surface area when buying one tonne of Holmen INNR.

  • 1 tonne 85 gsm fluting paper = 11,765 m2
  • 1 tonne 80 gsm fluting paper = 12,500 m2
  • 1 tonne 73 gsm Holmen INNR = 13,699 m2

When switching to 73 gsm from 85 gsm you'll get 13,699-11,765=1,934 more square metres. Yes, that's 1.9 km more material counting with a reel or sheet width of 1000 mm, or 1.2 km extra material counting with a reel or sheet width of 1600 mm.

Lower carbon emissions

How much will switching to a 73 gsm Holmen INNR reduce the carbon footprint of your containerboard? You will need the supplier's carbon footprint declaration to sort this out. Our carbon footprint declaration, based on the CEPI framework, is free to download.

Calculate with the amount of tonnes you need, compare to the carbon footprint of the material you have used before, and see the difference. We can help you calculate, if you would like. This is how we at Holmen Paper work to reduce your containerboard CO2 emissions.

Holmen Paper as a supplier of containerboard components

Holmen is a supplier of fluting/medium containerboard to converters and and corrugated cardboard producers in Europe. Why buy from Holmen? Because we are dedicated to changing the market in a sustainable way. This means we take extra care to live up to every promise of quality, reliability and correct deliveries.

Containerboard mill with low carbon footprint

We have set up our processes to enable production with an extremely low carbon footprint. By using fossil-free electricity our mills have got an ultimate competitive advantage that is equally important for our graphical papers and containerboard components. By using fresh fibres that provide volume and strength as our main raw material, we can reduce the weight of paper and containerboard.

Holmen Paper makes high-yield products, where our pulping method and paper machines bring out the best of the fresh fibres. This means we can support the market with more m2 and less CO2. We enable packaging industries – and end users – to reduce their climate footprint while using a renewable material.

Resource-efficient containerboard production

At Holmen Paper we use byproducts from Holmen Group's greatest asset, the forest, to make innovative strong and lightweight paper. Our products, made from fresh fibre from Nordic forests play an important role in the European recovered fibre ecocycle, to keep the cycle running.
