Foil and Film laminates

To attain a specific solution, paperboard is coated with plastics to combine the mechanical properties of the paperboard with the barrier and sealing properties of plastics or foil and film. Aluminium foil and metallised polyester film are laminated to the paperboard to provide a metallic effect or barrier properties. The choice of material is determined by the demands and use of the product.

Product description

Metalprint digital is a paperboard with a metallised polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film laminated to the print side. It is typically used in premium packaging for perfume, cosmetics, wine and spirits, confectionary and other graphic applications where decorative printing is used.

The metallized PET surface has an exceptional surface smoothness with the ability to faithfully reproduce the most sophisticated printing images. Metalprint is ready to print on as its surface does not require preprint treatment and also offers very good barrier properties.

Metalprint digital has been developed and certified for printing without pre-treatment in the HP Indigo 4-series one shot. This eliminates the need for an additional priming step and makes the digital print process even more efficient.

Metalprint Digital Properties

Tolerances Methods/Remarks
Added grammage (g/m²) 29 +/-10 % ISO 536
Added thickness (µm) 25 - Calculated value
Surface smoothness (µm) ≤ 1 - ISO 8791
Adhesion 5 ≥ 3 Internal

Last updated 01 Jun 2019

Regarding adhesion, the scale is 1–6. (6 = the best possible adhesion on the concerned surface).

For Metalprint the estimated increase in stiffness as a result of the lamination process is, for machine direction 5–12%, for cross direction 14–24%, in relation to the specified baseboard value. The lower the baseboard grammage, the higher the percentage increase.

Holmen recommends a maximum 1 (one) year time limit, from delivery, for board in storage.

For paperboard with barriers or foil lamination the recommended storage time is no longer than 6 (six) months due to declining effect of any surface treatments.

The above recommendations are only valid if the product is stored in its original wrapping.
