Overview

Barriers and coatings for paperboard packaging

Holmen’s paperboards can be combined with various barriers and coatings to add special characteristics to the packaging material. Barriers and coatings are used on paperboard to protect against liquids and moisture transmission, as well as providing sealability and temperature resistance. Foil and film barriers are sometimes also used to achieve special visual effects.

Product variations

Polyethylene (PE)

PE coated paperboard is suitable for disposable cups or packaging for frozen foods, meat products, and chocolate.

Applications

Paperboard for protective packaging

Plastic-coated or laminated paperboard provides moisture and grease barriers while enhancing durability and appearance. PE coatings suit disposable cups and frozen or greasy foods, while PET coatings resist high temperatures for ovenable trays. Foil and film barriers add premium visual effects and surface protection, and is ideal for cosmetics, perfumes, and dried food packaging.

Sustainability

Lower your carbon footprint with plastic coated paperboard

Reducing the plastic content of your packaging to just a thin coating will substantially reduce your carbon footprint. By using paperboard as a carrier with a plastic coating, you can reduce the amount of plastic used to about a fifth of what would have been required for an equivalent rigid plastic container. A thin plastic coating is all you need to ensure that the contents of your paperboard packaging are protected.

Plastic coatings

The plastic-coated paperboard surface can have different finishes. Depending on the surface structure of the cylinders cooling down the molten extruded plastic film, it is possible to produce both a glossy finish or a matt (Non-set-off) surface. The choice of surface finish depends on application needs and the converting process. The surfaces can also lessen the risk of blocking feeding sheets and blanks in the converting process. Typical values for our most common plastic coatings are tested according to ASTM F-1249/ DIN 53122 (water vapour permeability) and ASTM D-3985/DIN 53380(oxygen permeability).

Foil and film barriers

The finish of a foil or film laminated print surface is determined by the smoothness of the baseboard and by the amount of plastic applied. Our products, combined with an extruded PE tie layer, result in a smoother result than the alternative lamination technique using an adhesive. When printing on a foil or film laminated surface, special inks for foil, litho or UV drying are recommended.
