Iggesund paperboard mill

About

About the Iggesund Mill

Iggesund Mill is one of the world’s most advanced paperboard mills, producing premium fresh fibre-based board with a legacy dating back to 1685. Located in the middle of Sweden, embedded in forests by the shores of the Baltic Sea, it combines cutting-edge technology, sustainable energy and skilled craftsmanship to deliver Invercote, a paperboard trusted by brands worldwide.

A world-class paperboard mill

The Iggesund mill, together with the Strömsbruk site, is a fully integrated pulp and paperboard facility. All pulp used in Invercote is produced on-site and pumped wet to the board machine, preserving fibre strength and reducing energy use. The mill operates in synergy with an integrated sawmill, using production waste to generate bioenergy and supplying steam for timber drying.

Technology meets craftsmanship

Hundreds of metres of precision machinery run around the clock, producing bright white premium paperboard. But technology alone isn’t enough, the unique properties of Invercote are the result of expert knowledge, teamwork and a strong production culture. Every sheet reflects the pride and precision of the people behind it.

Investing in bioenergy

In 2012, Iggesund mill commissioned a new recovery boiler, enabling full energy self-sufficiency and district heating for the local community. The boiler also supplies surplus electricity to the national grid. Since its installation, emissions have dropped significantly: fossil CO₂ by over 85 per cent, particles by 45 per cent, and sulphur by 35 per cent. Today, only 1 per cent of airborne particles in Iggesund village originate from the mill.

Customer-focused delivery and support

Reliable delivery is essential. Iggesund’s maritime transport system ensures low-impact global distribution, while every tonne of Invercote comes with expert documentation and technical support. Holmen’s customer service helps optimise production economics and achieve outstanding end results.

Our process at the Iggesund mill

Invercote is made from chemically produced cellulose fibres, extracted by cooking timber in lye. The fibres are rinsed and bleached, while the remaining lignin is burned to generate thermal and electric bioenergy. Thanks to advanced purification systems, the mill has minimal environmental impact; even fish caught near the site show no chemical difference from those in unaffected waters.
