Workington paperboard mill

About

About the Workington Mill

Workington Mill is a world-class paperboard mill in the UK that excels in producing premium folding box board (FBB) using fossil-free bioenergy. The result is carbon neutrality and a product that meets modern packaging demands. Incada, which is produced at the mill, is of the highest quality and holds a prominent position in the market.

A world-class paperboard mill

Continuous development and adaptation to customer needs are essential for success in a competitive market. Workington Mill is an integrated pulp and paperboard facility. Since 2013, it has been fully powered by fossil-free bioenergy. Bleached mechanical pulp is processed on-site and combined with purchased chemical pulp to create a multi-layered board construction tailored for modern packaging.

Investing in bioenergy

In 2013, a biomass boiler was inaugurated, marking a shift from fossil fuels to 100 per cent bioenergy. This investment significantly reduced carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to removing 65,000 EU average cars from the road. The mill also promotes local bioenergy initiatives, including willow cultivation.

Premium paperboard that pays off

The finishing process is a key part of Holmen’s customer service, directly influencing delivery times and integration into customer operations. Paperboard production is a demanding process, requiring a balance between long production runs and market needs for customised formats and deliveries. On-site finishing helps meet these demands efficiently, without increasing production costs.

Our process at Workington Mill

Incada, the folding box board produced at Workington is constructed in several plies and is a combination of chemically and mechanically produced pulp. The chemical pulp is purchased from other manufacturers, whilst Workington produces the mechanical pulp. This involves grinding up the timber, which results in a pulp that adds stiffness and thickness to the paperboard.
